Overview

Civicon was appointed to deliver a major civil engineering programme at Cardiff Airport, focused on upgrading critical runway and taxiway infrastructure. Working in a live operational environment, our team managed complex airside works to ensure long-term resilience, safety, and efficiency across the runway and taxiways.

Scope of Works

  • Pit & Ducting Installation – providing new ducting systems.

  • Drainage Works – upgrades and repairs along with the installation of CIPP liners to strengthen stormwater resilience.

  • Fillet Excavation & Groundworks – excavation and reconstruction to expand infrastructure footprint.

  • Concrete Plinths for Sign Bases – new structural supports.

  • Emergency Response Support – providing rapid repair capability for patching and operational safety.

  • Landscaping – Reinstatement of large-scale habitat areas

Delivery Approach

Civicon coordinated closely with Associated Asphalt and Cardiff Airport stakeholders to manage works safely and efficiently. By leveraging data-driven planning and digital reporting, we minimised disruption to airport operations and maintained clear communication with all project partners.

Key elements included:

  • Night-time working and phased scheduling to reduce operational impact.

  • Integration of drainage, ducting, and civil upgrades to streamline delivery.

  • Collaboration on plant logistics, resource sharing, and safety compliance.

Outcome

Delivered within the agreed programme, the Cardiff Airport works strengthened critical infrastructure across the runway and taxiway network. The project not only improved operational resilience but also provided a foundation for future upgrades, ensuring the airport can meet increasing demands with confidence.
